The new policy states that unless a prejudice is stated, stylistic preference cannot be used as a criterion for assessment and so there is also here a presumed equivalence between ideology and style.

AMERICANS ARE LEAVING GATED COMMUNITIES
Fewer than one-fifth of Americans want homes in gated communities, according to a new marketing study from GfK Roper Consulting.
The study, "Modern Communities," found that Americans are most at home when they feel a sense of inclusion. Work, faith, sporting or volunteer collectives and online groups play as much a roll in today's definition of "community" as family and home life.

WHERE MODERNISM HIT AN ART DECO WALL
The American Institute of Architects recently asked a national sample to judge American buildings, monuments and other structures. Each participant in the survey rated some of the 247 buildings nominated by the institute, and the scores were tallied into overall rankings of Americans' favorite buildings.
To the dismay of sophisticated architects and architecture critics, not a single Modernist building made it to the top 10. The only modern and Modernist structure to (barely) crack the top 10 was the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH URBAN SPRAWL?
The United States' future urban land development should not reproduce the pattern of sprawl. This is the main conclusion of a short, but concise paper by James McElfish of the US Environmental Law Institute. In the paper, McElfish lists ten adverse effects of sprawl that have become apparent over the past years. Similarly to the 2006-report of the European Environmental Agency, the paper emphasises that urban sprawl should be a priority issue on the public policy agenda.

EIN SCHWEDE IN BERLIN
Er gehört zu den großen Unbekannten der deutschen Architekturgeschichte: Der Schwede Alfred Grenander (1863-1931), der an der Entwicklung Berlins zur Weltstadt und modernen Architekturmetropole entscheidenden Anteil hatte. Als Chefentwerfer der Berliner Hoch- und Untergrundbahn-Gesellschaften schuf er Industriedesign _aus einem Guss', dessen konstruktive Klarheit, Funktionalität und werbewirksame Zeichenhaftigkeit bis heute überzeugt. Wegweisend war dabei sein Umgang mit Stahlkonstruktionen ebenso wie mit Farbe, die hier bereits ungewöhnlich früh raumkonstituierend zum Einsatz kam. Kaum wahrgenommen wurden bisher die Villen- und Industriebauten des Künstlers sowie seine Innenraumgestaltungen und Möbelentwürfe gerade der Zeit vor dem 1. Weltkrieg. Auch sie verdeutlichen, dass Alfred Grenander zu den maßgeblichen Neuerern seiner Zeit gerechnet werden muss.
