Byantikvar Marte Boro: Indirekte fører det til et stort press på den eksisterende bebyggelsen - man vil rive for å bygge høyere, og mer direkte fører det til at den indre byens karakter og skala vil endres. Muligheten for økt utnyttelse vil føre til større konflikt rundt bevaring av bygninger fordi "reduksjonen i gevinstpotensial" blir stor. Det kan også føre til økt spekulasjon i forfall.

KJETTERSKE TANKER OM BYUTVIKLING
Ragnvald Bing Lorentzen, sivilarkitekt MNAL skriver: Felles for "strøksgatene" er at de er travle gater, de oppsøkes og benyttes av mange mennesker. De er viktige i bysammenheng. De er med på å skape Oslos identitet. Å endre disse med påbygg som foreslått i Kommunedelplanen vil gripe sterkt inn i byens nåværende egenart. Ifølge ovennevnte amerikanske undersøkelse vil det skape utrygghet for beboerne.

FJORDBYEN I OSLO - TRUSSEL MOT KLIMAET?
En barrière av høyhus mot fjorden vil forandre det lokale klimaet. Slik disse planene fremstår, vil deler av byen få mer forurensning og surere vintervær. Da Postgirobygget ble reist, viste det seg at vintertemperaturen sank og forurensningsnivået steg på den siden av bygget som vender inn mot byen.

VIL VI KUNNE FÅ ET GENUINT BYMILJØ PÅ MAJORSTUEN I OSLO?
Planforslaget "Bykarre" er ett av de tre forslagene som nå skal vurderes. Lokale krefter mener Majorstuen er best tjent med dette forslaget. "Bykarre" baserer seg på tradisjonell kvartalsbebyggelse oppdelt i bygårder. Vi ønsker ikke høyhus, men vil ha en moderat utnyttelse av området, sier prosjektleder Audun Engh i Byens Fornyelse.

PRINCE CHARLES WARNS OF "SUPERSIZED UK"
The Prince of Wales has urged more people to walk and cycle in a bid to tackle unhealthy living. Speaking to a conference in London he blamed the infrastructure of towns and cities for discouraging pedestrians and physical activity. The prince questioned the role town planning had in promoting people's health.

SPRAWL AND HEALTH
A number of studies and articles from important organizations are coming out saying the same thing, that sprawl is bad for our health.
Suburbs, it seems, can make you swell. Call it the sprawl effect. A strip mall here, a housing development there, an industrial park yonder, all connected by roads, leave little room for pedestrians.

BJØRVIKAFADESEN I OSLO
I sin iver etter å renvaske et uklokt Bjørvika-juryvedtak har NALs avgående landsstyre gjort sitt siste sprell og gitt sin fulle støtte til juryen, en jury NAL selv oppnevnte. Landsstyrevedtaket avdekker feighet og er et oppsiktsvekkende forsøk på å "vedta" at fysiske lover ikke gjelder. Konkurranseprogrammet krevde løsninger med beregnet energibehov lavere enn 80 kWh/m_/år, men juryen plukket ut puslete løsninger rundt 80 og ett (Urban Energy) lå nærmere 200 enn 100. NAL har opptrådt uredelig, uetisk og faglig forkastelig skriver konkurransedeltager og sivilarkitekt Harald N. Røstvik som ber om internasjonal granskning.

THE SMARTCODE: A WEAPON TO FIGHT THE SPRAWL WAR
The SmartCode by DPZ is now available as an alternative to conventional zoning regulations. According to its lead author, Andrés Duany, the SmartCode is based on the traditional neighborhood model as it varies along the urban-to-rural Transect, "a natural law that can be observed anywhere," he said.

CONGRESS OF NEW URBANISM 2006
The congress will be held June 1 - 4, 2006 in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. This year, the attention of the Congress will turn to a timely theme: Developing the New Urbanism.
Developing the New Urbanism will focus on implementation and will highlight the role of the New Urbanist developer. Development is the choreography of diverse disciplines, many of which have been advanced by the New Urbanism. Until this point, however, CNU has not devoted enough attention to New Urbanist developers and to the ways in which we can best infuse New Urbanist principles into the development process. CNU XIV will shift the focus from those who plan and design to those who implement, so that we may begin to systematically increase the numbers and quality of those practitioners who develop New Urbanist buildings and places.
Registration will open March 1st, 2006. To attend, you have to be a member of Congress for the New Urbanism.
